| I know, I’m not in the batter’s box… |
Josh and I purchased the ticket strips for the All Star Game months ago. A ticket strip includes entrance into FanFest at Jacob Javits Center, Futures Game, Legends/Celebrity Softball Game, Home Run Derby, and the All Star Game. Our tickets were for standing room “seats” but honestly despite the lack of seating this will be one of my most favorite baseball memories of all time (though I do wish we saw the game when it was at Yankee Stadium), second is probably when I sat in Mayor Bloomberg’s personal seats at Yankee Stadium (right behind the away dugout).
Anyway, we didn’t end up using our tickets for the Futures or Legends/Celebrity Softball Game last Sunday. Between the heat and how tired I felt after the long run that morning, we decided to skip. However, on Monday night we made it over to the Javits Center after work and while everyone was at the Home Run Derby (two of our friends were at Derby with the tickets), we enjoyed a quiet stroll around the different displays at FanFest. We even got up and personal with the 2013 World Series trophy! While, I try to be an optimist for the last half this season, I am sad to say I don’t think the trophy will end up at Yankee Stadium this year.

Tuesday night was the big game! We arrived at the stadium early and found a great spot on the left field foul territory side of field level to watch the introductions and first couple of innings. Though the Yankees’ representation in this year’s game was weaker than previous years, I was extremely excited to see Robinson Cano and Mariano Rivera. After the first couple of innings (and especially after Cano was hit by Matt Harvey and out of the game in the first inning), we walked around the stadium exploring the different views and food choices. I have to say, even though I am a Yankees fan, CitiField is pretty incredible and really makes going to baseball games an experience.
I am disappointed that we didn’t stay long enough to watch Mariano Rivera pitch (after all, it was a weeknight) that evening but we did make it home to catch the end of the game (AL won 3-0) and watch Mo named MVP. I really hate Jason Gay’s columns, mostly because everything he usually writes about annoys me and I do not agree with. However, while I certainly did not appreciate the intro to his latest column about Mariano Rivera, I do agree that, “We could all stand to be a little more Mo.” I have been following the Yankees and Mo since his debut in the major leagues in 1995, and it will certainly seem like my baseball fan era is coming to a close when he retires this fall.
